Gomuban Relief Printing Plates
This soft, very easy to carve synthetic rubber plate is used extensively in Japanese classrooms as a relief printing block.
Compared to white eraser material (Speedy Cut or MasterCarve) Gomuban is just as easy to carve but it is stiffer so it holds very fine details and crisp edges even under pressure from a press. It is so dense that it can be printed either as an intaglio or as a relief print.
Draw directly on Gomuban with permanent markers or transfer images with carbon paper. We have tested our Red Carbon Paper and it transfers well but it can be rubbed off with hard pressure, so you need to be careful as you are carving or go over the lines again with a permanent marker before you start to carve.
The green side is the one meant to be used, however if the blue side is in good condition you can print on it as well. The black core contrasts with the outer colors making it easy to see the carved areas.
Our supplier in Japan assures us that Gomuban is only available in one size, 300 x 400 x 3mm or 11.75" x 15.75" x 1/8". It is very easy to cut Gomuban into smaller pieces using a metal ruler or straight edge and a utility knife.
