Aquatint Screens
An 8.5" x 11" Aquatint Screen held over a Solarplate
Aquatint Screens are reusable, high resolution, 80% stochastic (indeterminate or random) screens, covered with minute, randomly-sized, randomly-spaced opaque dots. Unlike half-tone screens, Aquatint Screens do not leave a discernible pattern on the Solarplate.
An Aquatint Screen is used to prepare Solarplates for intaglio printing.
Double exposing a Solarplate to both an Aquatint Screen and a transparency of the art results in a plate that has enough texture or bite to retain ink, give back a wide tonal range and preserve the quality of drawn marks, brush strokes and fine lines when it is printed.
Aquatint Screens also help you control the depth of the grooves in the plate, create plates for printing extensive black areas, and produce stunning photogravure-like effects.
