A baren sits on the Baren Wata
Baren Wata
Traditionally the baren is placed on a cotton wool pad while printing. This elegant version made by the Hon Baren craftsman in Japan consists of a black base with feet, topped with a thick synthetic wool pad.
Each time the baren is placed on it, a small amount of oil from the baren will transfer to the pad, keeping the barengawa (bamboo sheath) lubricated and supple. This helps extend the life of the barengawa and protects it from moisture in the printing paper.
After printing, do not store your baren on the Baren Wata, since long contact with the oil that accumulates on the pad makes the barengawa too soft.
